Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Daily Cleanser: awesome for sensitive skin

A few months ago (okay, let’s call a spade a spade; it was 8 months ago!), I went to the AAD conference in San Diego and did a Q&A with J&J scientist Warren Wallo. I just realized that I never posted it–I mean, seriously, Jolie…8 months later?!–but better late than never, right?

Q: What makes your new Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Daily Cleanser so revolutionary?
A: This is the first time that we have marketed this dramatically new cleansing technology in the facial category, delivering highly effective cleansing with a new level of mildness, while providing an exceptional cleansing experience for our consumer.

Q: You use words like “dramatic” and “exceptional.” Why? How does it work?
A: Our scientists invented and patented HMP (hydrophobically-modified polymer) technology. This is a new approach to cleansing, where a foaming surfactant can be attached to a polymer backbone to prevent the undesired penetration of surfactant into the skin, which leads to irritation. It maintains highly effective cleansing with excellent aesthetics, including the foaming experience that consumers have told us that they want in their favorite daily facial cleanser.

Q: How long has the cleanser been in formulation/testing?
A: Our first scientific research on polymer cleansing began 9 years ago and the current version of HMP technology initiated seven years ago. We filed patent applications to protect our intellectual property and then we performed further research to optimize the characteristics of our formulations. Our scientific publications on this technology began appearing in scientific journals in 2009 and 2010, followed by scientific posters in 2011 at the American Academy of Dermatology annual meeting, highlighting our clinical studies with this new cleansing technology. We are continuing to present new information in posters and articles, as additional studies are completed. Look for two new scientific posters at the 2013 AAD meeting in Miami, FL in March.

Q: Are there any new, promising anti-aging advances on the horizon?
A: 21st century science is helping us to advance our understanding of aging skin at a rapid pace. We’ve been able to identify new targets and new pathways in the skin where we can focus our investigations. We are learning with science to speak the language of the skin, so that we can identify ingredients that can help our skin to naturally improve by using the skin’s own processes. We are introducing a new anti-aging technology to dermatologists at the 2013 AAD Annual Meeting in March that provides multiple benefits for facial anti-aging. This exciting new approach leverages our fundamental research on skin, specifically skin aging that is associated with over-expression of inflammation over time.

Q: Why is it so hard to combat adult acne?
A: The skin on an adult woman’s face tends to be drier and often more sensitive than facial skin of teenage girls. However, many acne cleansers are designed to aggressively remove oiliness and shine, rinsing very clean and often leaving a tight feeling. Similarly, some acne treatments that are designed for teens can feel overly drying for an adult consumer. Now, newer cleansers have been designed that remove the unsightly oil and shine without stripping skin’s own natural moisturizing components. All in one treatment products are being introduced that can provide valuable benefits for the more sophisticated adult consumers who are still dealing with acne issues, while needing to dealing with dryness and early signs of aging on their face.

Q: Can you talk about the importance of compliance in skincare?
A:  Compliance is essential to obtaining your desired benefits when using skin care products. This is one of the reasons why we do so much work directly with our consumers, to ensure that they love our products and look forward to using them every day. You reap what you sow, in that if you use your product every day, you can see and feel the improvements. While if you only use it once a week, you will likely be disappointed with your results. This applies to everything from your daily moisturizer with sunscreen, to your acne treatment, to your body moisturizer. We offer amazing skin care technologies that can protect, moisturize, exfoliate and beautify your skin, but only if you use it regularly. Daily sunscreen benefits are seen over time, such as when you go back to your college reunion and you are the youngest looking one in your circle of friends. Acne is a condition that needs to be managed with a great daily cleansing and treatment regimen, so that you skin stays clear and you can minimize emerging acne and breakouts. Daily use of body moisturizer can allow you to achieve a new level of smoothness on your skin and avoid flaking and itching that accompanies dry skin. Invest the effort and you will love the results.
